The Kunstmuseum and the Kunsthalle Appenzell combine to create one institution. When rebranding, it was very important to us to emphasise this special aspect and highlight the heterogeneity as a strength. Normally, an exhibition takes place in both institutions at the same time. We address this fact in the design. We create a common subject that acts as a link on collectively used media. In screen printing, an exhibition-specific motif is created by manually masking off the unnecessary information. The masking process is deliberately «unclean» so that elements of one exhibition are retained and thus influence the other. The screen in A2 format is used flexibly for different poster sizes and therefore allows a cost-efficient print realisation. At the same time, the play with the format becomes the central branding element.

In response to the shocks caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the exhibition «Art as Connection» is designed as an experimental and open exhibition. Curators and artists developed the exhibition concept together in a collective process.
The exhibition catalogue continues this vision and focuses on the process of creating the exhibition. Emails, inputs, transcribed meetings and the exhibition budget - the entire process material flows together in the chronological documentation. In a transparent editing process, the project participants were able to intervene directly in the printed book dummy and delete passages or add new material. In this way, the publication opens up new perspectives on the works, the artists and the creation of an exhibition.

Roy Bosier—a ballet dancer, fashion and costume designer, clown, pantomime artist, movement trainer, teacher, actor, choreographer, father and physiotherapist. The diversity of his life is also reflected in his rich private archive. A participatory publication engages the readers to get involved in the editing process. Gradually, the private archive of the portrayed is thereby enriched with anecdotes.

The book borrows its structure from a classic manual. Ai Weiwei’s process is set in a narrative strand. Step by step, the reader is guided through the creation, manual and the subsequent reflection of the artwork. Through its linear narrative style, the art and working method become accessible and the viewer is directly involved in the project. Visually, existing manual elements are quoted and embedded in an art book context. The varnished “picture panels” are numbered in a way that is familiar from instruction manuals. In addition, material lists are combined with art photographs to emphasize the intertwining of the artwork and its building instruction.

In their exhibition “HOWTO”, the Sitterwerk explores the production processes of instructional videos. The visual identity focuses on the linearity of such videos. In analogy to these linear processes, the content is arranged in sequences – moving objects become static whilst the medium of the videos is emphasised.

The challenge of creating advertising materials for the “Caravan” exhibition series at the Aargauer Kunsthaus consists of communicating an unfinished exhibition. For our concept, we use the artist’s work approaches, fragments of inspiration and thoughts. Thus the flyer becomes a preview of the artist’s idea and acts as a link between art, artist and viewer. The design refers to the classic exchange of letters and the working mechanism of a folder.

Based on a poster sketch by the artists, we designed a communication and signage concept for the “Bricolage” exhibition in the Historical and Ethnological Museum of St.Gallen. The design uses the workings of bricolage (solving problems with the available resources). So, instead of working out the existing collage, we decided to make a poster series out of the layer masks of the corresponding Photoshop file. It refers to the working methods of the artist team, which referred to the exhibited masks from the archives of the museum. This mechanism of unmasking shapes the overall design.

For the general identity and the website, we focused on the viewer’s individual approach to the exhibited artworks. Therefore, he or she seeks his or her own way through the page. During the visit all decisions are recorded in the form of a protocol. This leads to a website that is created by the user’s individual decisions and documents his or her path to the sought information.
